Stable, versatile and affordable, BIC’s 7’3″ Mini-Mal model is practically an institution in the beginner-board game, and one of our best-selling surfboards year after year. Anyone looking to buy their first ever surfboard or upgrade from a soft-shell board, this is the sort of board that will serve you best: a mini-mal (i.e. a smaller version of the original “malibu”, or lonboard) in sturdy yet relatively lightweight construction.

Crucially for less experienced surfers, it has plenty of width and volume through the board’s mid-section. Part of the point is to provide you with the necessary stability to get to your feet consistently and maintain balance and momentum on the wave. Equally important, though, are the float and paddle power, which will help you paddle into more waves (key for rapid improvement, which sounds obvious but is often overlooked).

For a mini-mal, however, the BIC 7’3″ is relatively streamlined – see how the rail line pulls in aggressively towards the tail. In other words it’ll still be manoeuvrable and fun to ride out on the open face, so it’s not like you’ll grow out of it as soon as you master the basics. The wide point is relatively far back, too, nearer the tail than the nose, and this will also make it easier to instigate turns.

All BICs are 100% made in France, in BIC’s longstanding Brittany factory. DURA-TEC is BIC’s flagship surfboard construction, and in no small measure responsible for the brand’s success in the beginner-intermediate market. It’s the ultimate in “ding-free performance”: hard-wearing and low-maintenance without sacrificing the ability to perform.
